What the ride is actually like: the aircraft, the seat, the seven or twenty minutes in the air over the yatra route, the landing at Panchtarni, and tips for pilgrims who have never flown in a helicopter.
The Amarnath helicopter ride is short: about seven minutes from Baltal up the Sindh valley to Panchtarni, or about twenty from Pahalgam over Chandanwari, Sheshnag lake and the Mahagunas Pass. The aircraft are small, typically five to six passengers plus the pilot, flown by the operators the Shrine Board appoints, from marked helipads with a gate, a weigh-in and a short safety briefing.
Pilgrims sit by the windows and see the trail below, the camps at Sheshnag and Panchtarni, and on clear mornings the snow ridges above the cave. The landing at Panchtarni is at 3,650 m, where the air is thin and cold; the 6 km to the cave starts right from the helipad, with ponies and palkis waiting.
Flights are smooth in the clear mornings when they operate; weather holds are the normal reason for delay, and sorties are not flown in cloud or wind. First-time flyers should eat lightly, carry a warm layer and keep the bag small.

The operators are appointed by the Shrine Board with DGCA-approved aircraft and crews, and sorties fly only in clear weather cleared by the pilots and the Board. Weather holds, not flights in poor weather, are the norm.

No. It depends on Shrine Board and security approval each season and on weather every day. In some years no helicopter service was operated. Our packages keep a pony, palki or trek backup and refund the ticket if the sector does not fly.
About 6 km, 2 to 3 hours on foot each way. Ponies and palkis are available at the helipad at rates fixed by the district administration.
